Ulbricht was originally sentenced to two life sentences plus 40 years without parole for his role in operating the Silk Road, a platform known for facilitating illegal transactions. His release follows a long campaign by libertarian supporters who argued that his punishment was excessively harsh for a first-time, non-violent offender. Ulbricht was seen leaving prison in a sweatsuit, carrying a small plant and his belongings in a mesh bag.
